A recent CBS News poll reveals a shift in American priorities regarding Donald Trump’s potential second term. While his deportation policies maintain approval, a majority now desires a stronger focus on domestic economic issues, particularly lowering prices, rather than pursuing tariffs on imported goods.
The poll indicates that 59% of Americans want Trump to prioritize price reduction, compared to 41% who favor tariffs. This preference transcends party lines, with Democrats and Independents showing an even stronger inclination towards price-focused policies. Even among Republicans, a majority (51%) aligns with this view. This bipartisan concern stems from widespread anxieties about the current state of the U.S. economy, where a considerable percentage of Americans express a negative outlook.
Despite the increased demand for economic relief, Trump’s hard-line stance on immigration remains popular. Sixty-two percent of Americans still approve of deporting all undocumented immigrants, a figure relatively unchanged from previous polls. However, significant partisan divides exist on this issue. Over 80% of Republicans support comprehensive deportations, whereas support is lower among Independents and Democrats.
The survey also gauges public opinion on the Biden administration’s immigration policies. A notable proportion of Americans perceive President Biden’s approach to deportations as excessively lenient. Over half of those surveyed believe his policies have been too soft, compared to a smaller percentage that feel they have been too strict. This further demonstrates the complexities of public opinion on immigration and the economy, and the challenges facing any administration seeking to address these critical issues.
